Charlie “Charles” J. Harris serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Central Florida Community Action Agency (CFCAA) at its headquarters in Gainesville, Florida. Prior to taking the position in late 2013, Harris served on the CFCAA Board of Directors for over 20 years. During that time, he served as board chair, vice chair, and treasurer. He also served as chair of the executive, finance and audit, and development and program planning committees.
Harris was born in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. in Advertising. Harris worked as the Director of the Knight Division for Scholarships, Career Services, and Multicultural Affairs in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida prior. He previously worked at the University of North Florida, University of South Florida and UF Admissions. Harris retired from UF with Professor Emeritus status in October 2013, after 26 years on the faculty at UF and over 32 years in higher education.
In 2007 Harris was nominated by CFCAA and selected by the Florida Association of Community Action (FACA) as “Volunteer of the Year”. He was also the state’s nominee for the Southeast Association of Community Action Agencies (SEACAA) Volunteer of the Year award. Harris had a perfect board attendance record from 2010 – 2013 and has received numerous awards and proclamations.
Having completed several certification training curriculum courses for community action, sponsored by SEACAA, Harris plans to continue his professional growth by pursuing opportunities for additional training and advanced degrees.
